We gave our first 3 months rent today. JJR and I are now committed to a 3 bedroom house, with a small kitchen, largish lounge and largish garden that needs some work. Now we just need to figure out how we can afford to furnish it, hire security guards to protect it, and find some nice lady who doens't plan to rob us while we are at work to clean and maintain it.
In other news, I found "bikerdad" appauling enough to figure out how to change the settings on my account and you should no longer need to sign in to leave a comment, should you wish to do so :)
In more other news, I have recieved conflicting reports about a tiny bug that may or may not exist in Malawi, that goes into your clothes while they are drying on the line, and are only killed when items are ironed. Since the guy at the guest house who was doing my laundry didn't insist that everything be ironed, I only pulled out the wrinkly stuff, which did not include my pyjamas, which I am now partly convinced were the temporary lodging for said tiny bug who may currently be residing in the bottom crease of my butt. Since I am only partially convinced that this is the case, and in equal parts convinced I am paranoid, in part due to the side effects of my crazy larium malaria drugs, I have decided to put off the execution of Janna's very generous offer to check out the situation. Will keep you posted.

Man, I hope that bug is an urban myth! YIKES!
Glad to know you got a roof over your head??
Q: you have to pay a security guard?? Really?!? wow...
Yes, it's very common here to have a night watchman. There isn't a lot of violent crime in Lilongwe, but people will rob you blind if you let them. I already know people who have been robbed by thier house staff, and that is one of my biggest concerns seeing as I have my new cameras and laptop. We have a brick wall around 3 sides of our house, and there is a wire fence separating us from one neighbour, but people will jump the fence and break in. We've been told that ususally if you have someone there, they will either deter burglars simply because there are other easier targets, or chase them away if they do try to jump the fence. We are meeting with a man this afternoon who comes highly recommended and used to work for the WUSC Regional Director.
